Here are some professional film title's from various teenage comedy films:-
THE INBETWEENERS
The film title appears in neon lighting which fits in well with the storyline plot, therefore working in parallel with each other. No other writing on the poster occurs in this style which helps draw in audience attention, due to the distinction of the font it can be easily recognised from various other posters. This type of font would work really well with if our storyline was about the party lifestyle, therefore the neon lighting could work but I believe that there are much better choices available.
For our groups film title, we may incorporate the font style into similar connotations as our narrative as I believe it works extremely well together. Also, the blue font looks very appealing due to the distinction it has from the background colours, for our product to look professional we will have to keep these ideas in mind when producing our own film title for the poster.
SUPERBAD
This style of font is very bold due to the font size alongside the colour used to help seek attention from potential viewers. The colour used for the title is red, representing dangerous activity which can be associated with the comedy style of film sometimes due to the nature of humour within the movie. Also, red works in parralel with the film's title, Superbad as they both represent similar connotations which suggests continuity throughout their products. Using red would work particularly well with Rom-Com style films due to red also signifying love and passion, therefore red could represent the love and passion of the film (Romance) but also suggest danger and humour within the storyline (Comedy).
For our film title, we may decide to have our film title written in red as I believe that it would work extremely well with the comedy genre and help address this to the audience. The style of font is very eye-grabbing due to the background and the main image being complete contrasts to the colour and style of font this film title is written in. Therefore when producing our final products, we will have to take this into account to maximise publicity and potential audiences.
MEAN GIRLS
Looking at this style of font, it again is very basic which supports what we want for our film title. Also, the font is written in big bold writing which is very effective in attracting the potential audience. The title is written in pink, which works very well as the main characters are mainly female and pink is stereotypically associated with females. Also, having 'girls' written in the title reinforces this stereotypical view. The title seems to fit in well with the rest of the poster due to pink being used for both, however the writing is written in darker pink which make it noticeable and appealing from the background. The font is written on its side and is read from bottom to top, this is very unique and will therefore show distance towards other comedies and be very appealing in attracting the audience attention.
For our film, I believe that using pink for our film title would not particularly work due to the main cast consisting of males. However, having the font similar to the background but being distinctive simultaneously is very effective as it is not used very much which creates a uniqueness among these products. Having the writing on its side may be appealing due to the attractiveness and difference to other products, on the other hand I feel that using the standard format of left to right would be better suited and will still get the message across.
DRILLBIT TAYLOR
The font used for this film title is very much similar to Superbad in terms of colour and font style, both being being appealing and eye grabbing alongside being written in red. These are similar connotations as to what we want to have. The red connoting danger, this works extremely well due to this film being a comedy-action film therefore these work as a package. The writing clearly stands out due to the green background, emphasising the films title which makes sure the audience take notice.
For our products, we will probably have our film title written in contrasting colours as to the background fully emphasising the title to the audience. This film again uses thick, red writing which I believe would be ideal due as the font would clearly be visable. to do this I believe that we should use a contrasting background, similar to Drillbit Taylor, to the writing to encourage the audience to remember and take focus in the name of our film.
Conclusion...
From the research of professional products, this gave us an idea of what to expect from teenage comedy films. This enabled us to build on what we wanted for our products. I believe that having the font written in basic font but being bold is actually what teenage comedy films tend to do, this therefore supports our group ideas of what to put into our fonts. I also feel that having the film title written in red would be very effective in connoting the teenage comedy film genre across to the audience. However, the background for our poster has not yet been decided so when creating our font, we will have to take this into consideration. Even though black font was not used by any of our example professional products, I think that black font could be used as well as it help represents the basic and simplicity of our products which is what we want.
Researched Fonts...
This style of font seems to be both bold but simple, the writing seems very distinctive and represents the style of font our group came up with. Also with this font being simple it represents the comedy genre very well as it works in unison with the story line our comedy trailer will be due to the simplicity it is. I believe that this font connotes a comic style effect as the design is similar to what would be used on comics, therefore reinforcing the comedy style effect.
YARD SALE
I believe that this font would help create the connotations that we as a group wanted and of typical comedy films, therefore using this font would possibly help in interpreting the genre to the potential audience. However the font on a comedy poster seems to be generally basic which probably signifies the little importance it has in distinguishing the genre, this could be the reason for comedy films using less creative fonts and instead using basic but bold style fonts.
WIMP-OUT
With this font being both basic and yet appealing due to its boldness, I feel that this font could work particularly well for our groups products. I believe the name of this font 'Wimp-Out' signifies the comic style effect this font has. The writing is similar to that of 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' which supports the reason as to why this font should be used as the main film title. However, I feel that for our groups products we would have to create something unique which clearly stands-out from other products but also using some characteristics of particular film fonts that I have researched. therefore this font is a possibility to use for the film title but I think it would be better if this style of font was used for less significant writing featured on the film poster.
TIMKID
The name of this font helps signifiy why it would help in getting our film genre across to the audience. Using 'Kid' would benefit our groups products as our storyline uses students who have just begun college but are considered outcasts to the majority of other students due to their school-like outfits. The writing seems like it could have been hand-drawn which adds to this effect. This font also fits in with what we as a group came up with for fonts as we wanted fonts which were simple to produce. I believe that this font could work for our products but isn't very distinctive to other products which is another factor our group came up with for font styles, however many fonts on comedy posters are very basic which limits the importance it has on the poster.
SET FIRE TO THE RAIN
This font is very simple to produce due to being basic which supports the comedy genre from my research above. The font is also similar to 'Timkid' and Wimp-out' as all these fonts could seem to be hand-written which works in unison with our storyline due to our storyline involving college. However, similar to Timkid, this font seems to lack the distinctive part I feel that our products need to help identify it clearly from other products.
URBAN SKETCH
This font is very different to other fonts used for comedy films we have researched which could either benefit us or not. With font being eroded, it doesn't really fit in well with what our group came up with for font styles which were simple and basic but being distinctive to other products. It clearly has the distincitve part from other products and shows signs of being basic as the writing still follows similar conventions of the basic style fonts. Also, the writing is a slight variation of the 'Gunplay' font which helps give this font some simplicity.
I believe that this font could either work or not as it is extremely distinctive to other teenage comedy films as many films use basic and bold fonts, however I think with this font lacking the simplicity this could be a weakness as well. With this font not following the similar conventions of teenage comedy films as the font is not simple or basic, I believe this font could work very well as the film magazines title instead.
GUNPLAY
Due to the 'Urban Sketch' font being very different to other teenage comedy films and is a variation of this font, I decided to evaluate the 'Gunplay' font. This font could be a potential as the font is very basic and distinctive among other comedy films which follows similar conventions of comedy films. this font has much more simplicity than the 'Urban Sketch' which makes this font more of a liability when producing our film title.
On the other hand, I believe that this font could mislead the potential audience into thinking that this film is an action-comedy film as I beleive it fits that genre much better. This is enhanced by the fact that this font shows similar conventions to 'Drillbit Taylor' which is an action-comedy film I researched earlier. Therefore this font will most likely not be used.
BRUNO BOOK
This font adapts to the similar conventions used from teenage comedy films as I believe that this font is very basic and unique among other teenage comedy films which represents the distinctiveness of this font. Despite this font being very similar to the font 'Set Fire To The Rain', I still think this font could work very well for our film title. However, this style of font is very appealing to the eye due not being as bold as other writing used in this font research, therefore I think this font could be used as sell lines on either the film poster or the film magazine as these are less significant the the film magazines title the film title.
OVERALL EVALUATION...
In conclusion, I believe for our film title both 'Badaboom', 'Wimp-Out' and 'Bruno Book' would be the best suited due to their distinctive qualities for being appealing and very simple to produce. 'Badaboom' I believe is the best choice for the film title as I think it has that comedic value which the other fonts fail to produce. 'Bruno Book' could be more likely used for little sell lines as this font seems less attractive and eye-grabbing than other fonts like 'Badaboom' and 'Yard Sale'.
For our magazine title, 'Urban Sketch' will probably be the most likely used as this font as with the font having the eroded quality, this could signify the magazine with uniqueness which will clearly stand out from other film magazine like Empire or Total Film as they both seem to use basic font. With 'Urban Sketch' being a slight variation of the 'Gunplay' font, I believe that this will represent that the font still has some simplicity value as well which would still fit in with the connotations of professional film magazines.
