Weekly Update 8

This week gave us a great step in the professionalism in our filming when Jake came up with an idea to source a gym for the section of our trailer when the geeks are getting tougher so on Wednesday we went out to the gym and filmed the two geek characters "getting tougher".

The footage was then edited together so we could go over what we had done in that session and show each of the parts going together.

We then continued to work individually on our posters for the bits to which we hadn't yet finished.

As the week after was half term, we didn't devise an exact plan of what to film as we later found out one of our main characters was unable to film. However over half term we decided we would all work seperately to make sure we had everything complete.

Filming Session 2- Wednesday 19th October

This is the footage we took on Wednesday the 19th of October at the Dolphin Centre Gym.
We did get filming permission to film there after ringing up on the grounds that we provided a detailed risk assessment and that we acknowledged that if something were to happen to equipment, actors or filmers, it was not up to them to resolve it or pay.
We also had to ensure that were did not get any of the public in shot sand if we did, we had to make sure that it was ok with them to be in shot, everyone potential person in the gym we thought may be in shot, we made aware of our filming and got permission to use the footage if they were in it.

Filming Session 2

On the second session we hope to continue filming as we did and get more shots for the next stages of the geek process. This would involve the 3 aspects of change hopefully (changing image, getting sportier and then getting females).

At this point we may also try to get our photo shoot done for the magazine and for each of the posters.

We were lucky enough in this session to manage to get access to a gym at The Dolphin Centre, after Jake rang up and asked the permission to film a couple of shots doing the various comedy style work outs. This gave us a perfect location to film in an environment that is actually there.

Weekly Update 7

In this week we began officially our print project.

This began with us first of all on the Monday and Tuesday (whilst our actors were unavailable) to set up our individual posters as a basic layout for the print project on photoshop. This involved sorting out the text or extra graphical elements, all except the main characters on the screen.

On the Wednesday we began filming. In this session we filmed the two geeks being approached by the second year in the way that he had agreed to help them. For the rest of the week it was mainly looking over this footage and then creating a clip of the session.

We also planned for the next filming sessions to make sure that they were all organised and the cast knew what was happening.

Filming Session 1

Monday 17th October 2011:

Intentions:

On this session we have all of our cast together as a way in which to make sure we have everything we need for it to work properly and we have all the correct forms and such.

On this day we plan to try to film as much as possible. This is involving all of the background shots, such as the geeks being bullied and the build up to the storyline. This sets up the main outline of the trailer and something we can use as the foundations.

Whilst the group is together, we may also try to do our photo shoot with them, this will make it easier and utilise our resources to the maximum potential.

Change in filming:

We planned to start filming on Wednesday 12th of October, we had got a camera hired and had arranged to meet the Cat to start filming for our first draft of the trailer, however only two members of the cast were present, Myself with costumer, and Joey Collins with no costume.

Due to this, we had to cancel filming and have scheduled to meet cast and start filming on Monday 17th of October.

Thomas' Poster Progress

During the production of my poster, I decided to have my poster portrait. Therefore when opening a new document, I put the requirements needed for an A4 sheet of paper in portrait position.

The font I have used is 'Badaboom' as this was chosen earlier from font research. I felt that this font showed similar connotations to comedy films due to the the font being basic in style. Using 'Badaboom' came about from further research developed from analysing professional products which films have a similar genre to ours as we felt as a group we wanted to create a font which was similar to other successful professional products, this will therefore give our products similar connotations as these which represent the comedy film genre. The use of red, also researched in the font research, was used again due to our research into various professional products as many films we researched including 'Superbad' and 'Drillbit Taylor'. These included thick bold font in red. Our group felt that the use of red would be best suited to our film due to this and our personal opinions.

I decided on including a review on this film poster as using this will be very effective in attracting audience appeal. I believe that having a review will work much better instead of including sell lines for our film as our film does not have the big-budget like many professional films have, therefore having a magazine review may help in promoting our film to the audience. The font is again written in red with the style 'Badaboom' to help fit together and not look unappealing. I decided on having 'Star Magazine' written in black font as I didn't want the whole film poster to use red font as it will look unattractive and dull which will not work when attracting the attention of the audience.

Putting five stars helps give an idea to the audience of what to expect from the film. The five stars will help generate a positive response from the audience as the film has been received positively and that has been reflected through the use of the five stars.

Many film posters include the credits at the bottom of the poster, I found this due to research into other professional products. I decided that if I wanted my film poster to look professional, I would therefore have to include one of my own on the film poster. Due to the credits not having much significance into the film, I followed other professional products by deciding to have the credits located at the bottom of the film poster.

This is the overall layout of my film poster. This is just a draft and isn't the actual products. I still need to organise a photoshoot of our groups actors with the best photo taken being used on this film poster to help promote it. Looking at the 'Moving On Up!' text, I decided to have this located in the top left corner as the audience are more drawn to the left, therefore the film's title will hopefully be what the audience notices first. Also, I dcided to have the text rotated about 30 degrees counter-clockwise as I felt that having the writing just in a straight line would look less appealing and simple, therefore having the text slightly rotated would help make it seem more of a comedy film and much more appealing to the audience. The review is located in the top right of the film poster, I felt that this review will help play a vital role in selling the film and that is the reason for its position as the audience tend to look top to bottom of a film poster. Again, the credits are located at the bottom of the film poster due to the insignificance it has to the audience but I have included the credits to make my products much more professional.

After adding all the text onto my film poster, I decided to add the release month and year to my film poster. I dd this to help create excitement and nervousness among the audience as the arrival of the film to cinemas is drawing closer. I decided to locate the release month and year at the bottom of the page as I felt that the boldness and distinctiveness of the font would help draw attention to it. Also, I believed that the release month and year were not as significant in comparison to the film's title and the review which will help sell the film.

When creating the text for the release month and year, I tested both red and black as colours for the text. I felt that these two colours would be the best suited for my products due the continuity it has amongst the other writing featured on the film poster. I prefer having the red font, similar to the 'Superbad' film poster as I believe it attracts more of an audience than the black font does. Also, having the credits written in black helps having the release month and year written in red as it makes it much more enterprising to the audience.

These are the two drafts of my film poster, the only difference is the colour of the text of the release month and year on each product. As discussed eariler, I prefer having the red font as it contrasts from the credits black which will help attract the audience to it, however I am keeping my options open until the photoshoot has been done and an image has been chosen for my film poster as I want the font that would look best with the image. However, I intend of having my photoshoot in the Media Studio with a white background. If my plans and aims work, I believe the red would be a better option to use instead of the black font again this supports my opinion.

Jake's Poster Progress

This Is how i made my two films posters.

The first thing i had to do was download the font that i would be using in the product. I did this after conducting font research and asking my target audience which font they thought was the most suitable font. In the the end BadaBoom was the favoured font which is the one i downloaded and used.

I then had to open photoshop and start a new project. I want my poster to be made in actual size so it is important that i selected the preset 'International Paper' which then enabled me to make my film poster to fit an exact A4 sheet, meaning that it would be easy to print and put up in plenty of places where it could be seen clearly.

After getting my blank document open, i had to install and then select the font which i would downloaded from Dafont.com before doing anything else. I selected the font as 'Badaboom' which then meant that all text i added to the product would be in that font unless chosen otherwise. This font is part of the house running theme which is recognised as part of our distribution package. All of our Posters as a group feature this font, as well as the magazine cover and the trailer itself.

I then began to add my titles to the poster in the selected font and place them in the suitable place like i had placed them on my flat plan. I then created the other titles which i added onto the poster again replicating wherei had placed them on my poster flat plan as above.

I made these titles with a different font called, 'hasteristico' which as other fonts, i had downloaded before starting the poster. This font also was chosen after some font research and which suited the poster best.

After adding these together and placing them in the corresponding places, this is what i ended up with.
I now had to add the photo i had taken of my Actor, howevet the photo i had taken had a black background on it which would not look well on the poster, therefore i had to get rid of this black background and place the image of my actor onto a transparent background enabling me to put it onto the poster without any background being affected.

I had to rotate the image, and then using the magic wand tool, i selected all of tom and a slight bit of the black background to crop and layer via cut to ensure that i did not cut any of the miage of tom off. After layering is via cut, i was able to delet the black background and was left with the image of tom. There were still small bits of black outline which i wanted rid of as i felt they did not look professional and made it look messy, therefore i zoomed in and used the eraser tool to get as rid of much as i could.
After doing this, i once again selected the image of Tom using the magic wand tool and refined the edges. This was to smooth out any sharp edges that had been left from the erasing i had been doing, ensuring that the product had a flawless smooth outline making it look even more professional.
This was the final product after adding the image of tom.

The main inspiration for my poster was the film Poster for 'You don't mess with the zohan'
This is becuase i felt this poster was extremely succesful in attracting me personally as a member of it's target audience. It does not give much away about the film but leaves me intrigued and wanting to know what the film is about. The title, 'Lather. Rinse. Save the world' in my opinion was also very succesful ig getting my attention, i want to know why it goes from hairdressing to saving the world. The huge contrasting in the two extreme activities are very comical and suggest that this is a comedy film. The layout is also very easy to read and understand making me feel comfortable, therefore i wanted my poster to achieve the same affect.

Who's moving on up?
Who's on their way to the top?
That is what i want the audience to think. i then began to feel and gathered from feedback that my poster had been lacking something, therefore i went out and took a photograph of a library. I adjusted the aperture to try and make the image appear blury, focusing more attention on the main title and picture of the poster.
My audience said that they preferred this as it gave the poster something more and appeared less boring and empty, whilst also focusing MORE attention on the title and main picture

Emily's Poster Progress

Individually we decided to make up our own posters, in order to all get credit.

Emily's Poster:

First of all I had to open up the blank document. For this I opened up photoshop, clicked file and new. I then changed the title of the document, set the format of the paper to "International Paper" and set the background to the plain white and pressed okay. After this the blank page appeared in front of me.
It was important to have the exact measurements there for the document to make sure that it is all correct and therefore useable for when it comes to the actual printing of the products and such.

I then had to sort out the actual text on the page. For this I hovered over the text icon on photoshop and then clicked onto the blank document. I then just typed as normal with the keyboard. This is important as it is one of the main foundations of the poster as it gives the details of names and releases etc.

As I discussed looking into my flat plans of the poster, looking at other well known and successful posters, I realised that black is not a usual colour used and that red had stronger connotations and would look more attractive. To change this I high lighted the text and then clicked on the colour palette and found the red and clicked okay.

From the flat plan research I came to the conclusion that I needed something to be even quirkier about the  name and what worked was a slant on it. To add this effect to the title of mine I clicked on the text layer and then Edit, Transform and Rotate. When I clicked on this the cursor turned into a little arrow and I then just twisted it around and pressed Enter on the keyboard. After this it came up with the icon and asked "Apply the transformation?" and I then clicked "Apply". This fixed the transformation so it stayed like this.

I repeated the text process again to get all of the text involved that was needed to work for the product and all that I needed.
